My name is James Lengyel, and I am a Boulder based, amateur photographer.
Photography grabbed my attention in my late teens after watching my father take photographs for the majority of my life. I had a part-time job at Best Buy selling digital cameras. In 2008 the Canon EOS 5D Mark II was released, and that camera was really something special to me.
Life happened, and a decade past before I picked up a camera again. In 2020 I bought a used Nikon D7100 and 35mm f1.8 lens. That started the street photography journey, for me. I ran around London taking hundreds candid photos of complete strangers. London is an intense city, you can stand in the middle of the sidewalk with a camera to your face and no one will pay much attention.
Eventually Covid-19 hit, and I felt the artistic itch to get away from simple candid shots. I started to explore my neighborhood of Chiswick. As the city reopened, I started to notice how light could bounce off buildings and create interesting shapes. As people would pass through those slivers of light it was possible to grab an interesting scene, and I started to fill that artistic itch.
I believe art is generally a form of self reflection. The candid photos probably reflected my desire to connect with people in a foreign land. The geometric shadows reflected how I see the world, in lines and patterns, and my need to embrace my own shadows.
I hope you enjoy the few photographs on this site. None are for sale, this is merely my own hobby and desire to share my work with anyone who is interested.
